It seems to others that only an ardent prayer, a request addressed to God in your own words, will help get rid of illnesses and any misfortunes. Still others do not at all consider it necessary to trouble themselves with prayers: they say, the Lord already knows everything, sees everything, and will give each of us the necessary help.

So what is prayer?

Metropolitan Anthony of Surozh said:

Canonical prayers

Canonical prayers, or the so-called "ready-made prayers" for all occasions, you can easily find in any Prayer Book. The canonical collections of prayers are arranged very conveniently: they contain Morning and Evening Prayers, prayers to the Lord, prayers to the Mother of God and prayers to the saints. It often happens that in prayer we do not always ask for what we really need, we ask, as it were, “in reserve”. Sometimes we ask for things that might not be useful to us, and as a result we get nothing.

But even when we ask God for something we cannot live without, we lack patience and perseverance. We believe that having asked once and not having received what we want, we must abandon the prayer: well, God does not give what you ask, what can you do! Why does God send sickness to us?

That's sickness for you! Did you act very badly? You will have a long and severe illness! Next time think before you do something bad...

If everything was so simple with God, life would be much easier for us here on Earth! It would be enough not to commit bad deeds, and each of us would always be healthy and prosperous. But you probably noticed yourself: very often kind, good, smart people live hard, get seriously ill, overcome adversity throughout their lives, and people who are not too decent live chic and don’t blow their mustache. They have everything - health, money, and luck in business ... Why is it so? Yes, because the Lord, indeed being the Supreme Judge, in fact does not judge us during his lifetime. And he doesn't punish. There are, of course, exceptions, but for this you need to do something absolutely terrible. In other cases, the Lord gives us freedom of choice: to do this or that, to go this way or that. We build our own lives. And you will have to be responsible for HOW they built it much later - when this process has already been finally completed. Believe me, the Lord is not at all concerned with punishing us with sickness for our every sin. Moreover, very often a disease is not a punishment for a person, it is sent to him, oddly enough, for his own good. It's hard to believe, but it's true. Here is how Father Georgy Simakov answers this question, rector of the church in the name of the Assumption of the Mother of God in the village of Troitskoye, Tver province.

– Many people are sure that illness is God's punishment for sins. Is it so?

- Of course not. In general, the Lord is merciful, He rarely punishes people. And our illnesses are not a punishment at all, as for some reason it is customary to think among the people. Sometimes diseases are given to a person as an admonition so that he stops sinning. Feel the difference? Not as a punishment, but as an admonition. It was clear that the young man was well versed in the knowledge of the Holy Scriptures, had an idea about some Christian dogmas, although somewhat distorted, but at the same time he was an absolutely non-church person ...

... He supported his arguments with the words of the Holy Scriptures: “It is said, “You shall worship the Lord your God and serve Him alone”” (Mt 4:10). So why is there such a large number of icons of saints in Orthodox churches, when there should be nothing but images of Christ? And when you enter the church, all you hear is pray to the Mother of God, Nicholas the Wonderworker, Panteleimon the Healer and someone else. Where does God go? Or have you already replaced Him with other gods?”

I felt that the conversation was going to be difficult and, apparently, a long one. I will not retell it all, but I will try to highlight only the very essence, because in our difficult time many people ask similar questions ...

To begin with, I invited the young man to deal with the definitions, following a simple logic ... So, who are the saints and why should they pray? Are they really some gods of a lower order? After all, the Church calls to honor them and offer prayers to them. To begin with, the veneration of saints is an ancient Christian tradition that has been preserved since apostolic times. The martyr who suffered for Christ, immediately after his death, became the object of reverence for the reverent veneration of believers. On the tombs of the first Christian saints, the Divine Liturgy was performed, prayers were offered to them. It is clear that special reverence was given to the saint, but not at all as a separate god. These were people who gave their lives for God. And, first of all, they themselves would be against exalting them to the rank of a deity. After all, we, for example, honor the memory of people who laid down their lives for the Fatherland on the battlefields. And we even erect monuments to them so that future generations would know and honor these people. So why can't Christians honor the memory of people who especially pleased God with their lives or martyrdom, while calling them saints? I asked the young man to answer this question. An affirmative answer followed. The first bastion of sectarian thinking has collapsed...

... Thus, the Orthodox do not worship the saints at all, but revere them. They are revered as senior mentors, as people who have reached spiritual heights, as people who live in God and for God. People who have reached the Kingdom of Heaven. And the basis for the veneration of mentors was given by St. Paul: “Remember your leaders…. and beholding the end of their lives, imitate their faith” (Heb. 13:7). And the faith of the saints is the Orthodox faith, and it calls for the veneration of the saints from apostolic times. And one of the greatest saints, John of Damascus, spoke of this veneration: “The saints are venerated – not by nature, we worship them, because God glorified and made them terrible for enemies and benefactors for those who come to them in faith. We worship them not as gods and benefactors by nature, but as servants and co-servants of God, having boldness towards God because of their love for Him. We worship them, because the King himself refers honoring to Himself when he sees that they honor the person he loves not as a King, but as an obedient servant and a friend well-disposed towards Him.

Our conversation with the young man turned into a more relaxed channel, and now he listened more than he spoke. But for greater persuasiveness, it was necessary to give a couple more weighty arguments for being right, and I hastened to do so.

The saints are our intercessors and patrons in heaven and therefore living and active members of the militant, earthly Church. Their grace-filled presence in the Church, outwardly manifested in their icons and relics, surrounds us like a prayerful cloud of God's glory. It does not separate us from Christ, but brings us closer to Him, unites us with Him. These are not mediators between God and people who would remove the One Mediator of Christ, as Protestants think, but our fellow-prayers, friends and helpers in our service to Christ and our fellowship with Him.

Now I could safely move on to the question of prayer to the saints. As I have already shown above, the saints are our prayer partners and friends on the path of serving God. But can't we ask to intercede for us before the throne of the Almighty? Doesn't the same thing happen in our daily life when we ask our loved ones and acquaintances to put in a good word for us in front of our superiors? But our Heavenly Father is much higher than any earthly authorities. And everything that cannot be said about ordinary earthly people is really possible for Him. But when praying to the saints, one should not forget about praying to the Lord at all. For He alone is the Giver of all blessings.

And this is a very important point, because many Orthodox Christians in prayer to the saints forget about the One to whom, in the end, the prayer request will be directed, even if it is the intercession of one of the saints. A Christian should not forget about the Lord his God. After all, the saints also served Him. By this I showed the young man how important it is not to go too far even in such a seemingly simple matter as prayer. It was clear that the guy was in some confusion, but having collected his thoughts, he gave out the last question: “Tell me, why is it necessary to pray to different saints on a specific issue?” I expected this question and the answer was already ready. Saints can help us not because of the abundance of their merits, but because of the spiritual freedom they acquire in love, which is achieved by their feat. It gives them the power of intercession before God in prayer, as well as in active love for people. God gives the saints, along with the angels of God, to do His will in the lives of people with active, albeit usually invisible, help. They are the hands of God with which God does His works. Therefore, it is given to the saints even beyond death to do works of love, not as a feat for their own salvation, which has already been accomplished, but, indeed, to help in the salvation of other brethren. And this help is given by the Lord Himself in all our worldly needs and experiences through the prayers of the saints. Hence the saints - the patrons of certain professions or intercessors before God in everyday needs. The pious church tradition, based on the lives of the saints, ascribes to them effective help to their earthly brethren in various needs. For example, George the Victorious, who was a warrior during his lifetime, is revered as the patron of the Orthodox army. The Great Martyr Panteleimon, who was a doctor during his lifetime, is prayed for deliverance from bodily ailments. Nicholas the Wonderworker is greatly revered by sailors, and girls pray to him for a successful marriage, based on the facts of his life. People who live off fishing pray for a successful catch to the apostles Peter and Andrew, who, before their high calling, were simple fishermen. And, of course, one cannot but say about the highest of all angels and archangels, the Most Holy Theotokos, who stands at the head of the host of saints. She is the patroness of motherhood.

Our conversation was coming to a logical end. I very much hoped that the arguments I had advanced should have left a mark on the soul of this young man. And I was not mistaken. Finally, he said a phrase for which one could talk for a very long time: “Thank you! I realized that I was wrong in many ways. Apparently, my knowledge of Christianity is still not enough, but now I know where to look for the truth. In Orthodoxy. Thank you very much again." With these words, my interlocutor left. Left alone with my joy, I hurried to the church to offer a prayer of thanksgiving to the Lord and all the saints who had helped me that day in my pastoral service. But that's a completely different story...

Why do we venerate holy relics?

What are holy relics? Why did the Orthodox Church establish their veneration? Where does the confidence of believers come from that through prayers at the holy relics they will certainly receive the help and intercession of the saints?

“The word “relics” in literal translation from Greek means “remains”. The word “relics” has always been used in the same sense in the Church Slavonic language. However, it would be more accurate to say that it is customary to call relics the bones of a deceased person, something that remains for a long time after his departure to another world.

In one chronicle of 1472, this is how the opening of the coffins of Moscow metropolitans resting in the Assumption Cathedral is described: “Jonah has been found whole, Photea is not everything, the “relics” are one” (Collection of Russian Chronicles. T. VI. P. 195).

In 1667, Metropolitan Pitirim of Novgorod was informed of the discovery of the relics of the Monk Nil Stolbensky: “The coffin and body of his holy land were betrayed, and the relics of his saints are all intact” (Acts collected in the libraries and archives of the Russian Empire by the archeographic expedition of the Imperial Academy of Sciences. St. Petersburg T. IV. S. 156). In general, “in the language of ancient church literature, imperishable relics are not imperishable bodies, but preserved and undecayed bones” (E. E. Golubinsky, Canonization of the Saints, pp. 297–298).

Church history says that the remains of the holy martyrs and great ascetics have always been called relics. Relics are revered, even if they are preserved only in the form of ashes or ashes.

In 156, the Hieromartyr Polycarp, Bishop of Smyrna, was killed with a sword and burned, but the bones that survived the fire and the ashes were for Christians "more honest than valuable stones and more precious than gold."

St. John Chrysostom writes about the relics of the Antiochian martyr Babyla: “Many years have passed since his burial, only bones and ashes remained in his tomb, which were transferred with great honor to the tomb, on the outskirts of Daphne.”

The Blessed Lucian tells the following about the relics of the holy Archdeacon Stephen he found: “Very small particles remained of his bones, and his whole body turned to dust ... With psalms and songs they carried these relics (remains) of Blessed Stephen to the holy church of Zion ...” Blessed Jerome says that the highly revered relics of the prophet Samuel existed in the form of dust, and the relics of the apostles Peter and Paul - in the form of bones (Golubinsky E.E. Decree. cit. P. 35, approx.).

At the present time, during the opening of the relics of St. Seraphim of Sarov (1903), St. Pitirim of Tambov and Hieromartyr Hermogenes, Patriarch of Moscow (1914), only the bones of the saints were found, which serve as an object of reverent veneration for all believers.

Why did the Orthodox Church establish the veneration of holy relics?

The explanation of this Orthodox tradition can be found in the works of the Holy Fathers.

John Chrysostom says: “The sight of the tomb of a saint, penetrating into the soul, strikes it, and excites, and brings it to such a state, as if he himself lying in the tomb prays together, stands before us, and we see him, and thus a person experiencing this, filled with great zeal, and descends from here, having become a different person ... Indeed, as if a light breeze blows from everywhere on those present at the tomb of the martyr, the breeze is not sensual and strengthens the body, but is able to penetrate into the very soul, arranging it in all respects and overthrowing her every earthly burden.

One of the teachers of the ancient Church, Origen, says: “There is a twofold society in prayer meetings: one is made up of people, the other is made up of celestials…” This means that when we pray at the relics of the saints, we seem to be praying together with them, in one prayer.

By the end of the 7th century, the Frankish Council ruled that the throne could only be consecrated in a church that contained the relics of saints, and the 7th Ecumenical Council (787) determined that “for the future, any bishop who consecrated a church without relics must be deposed” ( Rule 7). Since then, in every church there are antimensions, in which particles of holy relics are necessarily embedded and without which it is impossible to celebrate the Sacrament of the Eucharist. This means that in any church there are necessarily the relics of saints, which, according to our faith, serve as a guarantee of the presence of saints during worship, their participation in our prayers, their intercession for us before the Lord.

The third basis for the veneration of holy relics is the teaching of the Orthodox Church about relics as carriers of grace-filled forces. “Your relics, like a full vessel of grace, overflowing on all who flow to them,” we read in prayer to St. Sergius of Radonezh.

The grace of God is taught to humanity through those or other holy people who, during their lifetime, worked miracles, and after death imparted this miraculous power to their remains.

The grace-filled forces that act through the bodies of the saints during their lifetime continue to act in them even after death. This is precisely the basis for the veneration of holy relics as bearers of grace. Prayer is a huge power. “Prayer not only conquers the laws of nature, not only is it an invincible shield against visible and invisible enemies, - St. Demetrius of Rostov wrote, - but even holds back the hand of the Most Powerful God Himself, raised to defeat sinners.

“When we pray, we talk with God”- said St. John Chrysostom. Prayer is an invaluable gift to a person, with the help of which he can converse with the Lord, turning his mind and heart to him. Everything on Earth is given to us by God - food, clothing, home, our existence, and therefore we turn to God in all cases of life.

Prayer is communication with God

“The work of prayer is the first work in the Christian life. Prayer is the breath of the spirit. There is a prayer - the spirit lives; no prayer - no life in the spirit,- said St. Theophan the Recluse.

Christianity is not a collection of some separate disparate facts, knowledge, ideas. This is, first of all, communication with God, our Heavenly Father, our relationship with Him. These relationships are reflected in prayer. It is she who gives us the opportunity to feel His presence in our lives. For a believer, God is not something abstract, He walks with him through life, helps and supports him in difficult times. Each of our actions, each of our deeds, in one way or another, either brings us closer to God, or moves us away from Him.

“We must pray as if everything depended on God alone, and act as if everything depended on us” said Saint Thomas Aquinas. How true! You need to pray to God, ask him, but at the same time you can’t sit idly by, you need to act in accordance with God’s commandments.

Prayer is God's gift to man. But this gift is given only to those who are ready to receive it. . You cannot pray once and give up, believing that this is enough. Constant, daily prayer is the way to God.

Praying every day, following the rules set by God, a person receives an answer to prayer and the grace of the Holy Spirit. During such a prayer, the believer receives consolation, God strengthens him in his prayer feat. In order for the invincible power of God to penetrate us and help us resist all the destructive influences of the world around us, we need to turn to prayer as often as possible.

Prayer is the best way to achieve union with God. Holy Righteous John of Kronstadt said: “Not a single word will be wasted in prayer if it is said from the heart: the Lord hears every word and every word is in His balance.”

Speaking of special mood during prayer, it should be mentioned that you can’t consciously excite yourself, look for some visions, you can’t give excessive free rein to the imagination.

How often the evil one interferes in prayer, trying to penetrate the thoughts of the one who is praying, to distract him from prayer, from unity with God! Such a prayer will not benefit the one who offers it. It is necessary in every way to resist the intrigues of evil.

Does prayer work?

Sometimes people feel like prayer doesn't work. : a person prays, asks something from God, but nothing changes in his life, it seems to him that God does not hear him. However, the Lord does not always immediately respond to our call. As already mentioned, it is not enough to ask, you yourself must make efforts to change your existence and continue to pray. Then, if a person continues to believe, turns to God with a prayer, he will eventually see a good result. In order for us to be able to know the gifts that come from God, He leaves us for a while after the visit. It is by changing such states that we can understand His favor.

Often a believer, rejoicing that God has heard his prayers, thinks that it will always be so, and despairs, seeing that the words of another prayer do not have the same effect. However, it is not. We must believe that fervent prayer will bring the Lord back. God comes, and often He changes the way He appears. Thus, a person is enriched with Divine knowledge, grows in suffering and in joy.

What does it mean to pray?

What does it mean to pray? This means to express to God our doubts, fears, anguish, despair - in a word, everything that is connected with the conditions of our life. The Lord comes to us when we are humbly open to Him. He approaches quietly, so that some may not notice His appearance.

If you tune in to prayer and reject all extraneous thoughts, it can purify the mind and heart.

If you make a prayer daily rule, through it you can comprehend the depth of God's plan for us, the essence of which is that our earthly life is just a short moment that God gives us so that we penetrate into the depth of the all-pervading and all-encompassing love of Christ.

The Right Attitude to Prayer

The beginning of the ascent to God is our correct attitude towards that prayer, which should lead us to Him, until what He wants to reveal to us is revealed to us.

Holy righteous John of Kronstadt said that pray with all your heart for he who does not pray to God with his heart, “It’s like he doesn’t pray at all, because then his body prays, which in itself, without a soul, is the same as the earth”. Praying, a person stands before God, so prayer should be the mind, the heart, all the feelings. When we pray, we should imagine only God, who fills everything around with His presence.

God saves us not only when we are already mired in sins, but also when sinful passions are just about to entangle us. Then the Lord comes to us through our prayer. This means that we must not succumb to temptations and faint-heartedly give up when sins overcome us, we need to pray to God that He does not allow us to sin. “It is not then that a house should be saved from fire, when the fire has already spread everywhere in it,- here is another quote from the works of the righteous John of Kronstadt, - and best of all when the flame is just beginning. So it is with the soul. The soul is a house, passions are fire. The main thing in prayer is the closeness of the heart to God.

You need to pray not under compulsion, but sincerely, from the heart . When praying, you need to sincerely desire what we ask for, believe in it, feel the righteousness and truth of what you ask for.

If our life is far from righteous, darkened by numerous sins, then it can be very difficult for us to pray.

How soon does prayer get answered?

Prayer is not a monologue. Prayer contains not only our appeal to God, but also His answer. This is a dialogue, and, as in any dialogue, in prayer it is important not only to express your requests, thoughts, and feelings, but also to hear the answer, which is not always immediate. Sometimes God answers us during prayer, sometimes a little later. It often happens that we ask the Lord to help us immediately, and He comes to the rescue only after some time. But He comes, He helps, and He helps precisely because we asked for help in prayer. And when to come to our aid, God knows better than us, and we must understand this.

Prayer helps us learn more about God. When we pray, we must know that God will answer us, but the answer may not be what we expect, we may not like it. But this does not mean that the answer is wrong, it means that we have a wrong idea of ​​the situation. Prayer is never unanswered.

If we do not hear an answer, it means that we have not tuned in to meet Him. And when this happens, when we learn to fulfill His commandments, then we will immediately feel the presence of God, hear His answer to our prayers.

Turn to God in any free moment

Our rhythm of life is significantly different from what it was in ancient times. Often people do not find time to pray. But during any day we have even the smallest intervals of time, pauses, when we can and should think about God. We often spend these short breaks on vanity and idle talk. try use these pauses to turn to God - to ask Him for something or to thank (because we often forget to thank God for helping us in our prayers), just think of Him. Try to turn to God every free minute during the day. Once you learn how to do this, you will see how much more harmonious and fulfilling your life has become.

Why should you pray?

God is present in our lives everywhere and in everything. And although God is the Creator of all things, often various obstacles arise on the way of a person to God, which can be overcome with the help of prayer.

Turning to God with a prayer, we confide our sorrows and joys to him, we ask for something. But at the same time, we must always remember: God knows best what we need.

Prayer is definitely the main thing. She is our path to God; everything else is an aid to that.

The question arises: if the Lord already knows what we need, then why should a person pray? Yes, very often we turn to God with requests. But at the same time, it is important to understand that we pray not in order to beg something from God, but in order to be with Him. God is not the backdrop of our lives, not a means of solving problems in our daily affairs. Prayer fulfills the first commandment of Jesus Christ:

"Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind"(Luke 10:27).

We must pray in order to draw closer to Him. to be with Him, to constantly feel His presence, His grace. And for this you need to constantly turn to God - ask for blessings, thank you, ask for advice on what to do. At the same time, one should not forget what has already been said - to pronounce words not with the tongue, but with the heart.

What is prayer?

We can say that prayer is an indicator of our spiritual life. It, like a litmus test, checks whether we are on the right path, whether we are doing the right thing . We must live in such a way that we are always ready to do God's will , even if it contradicts ours. God knows better than we what we need. Therefore, one must accept His will with gratitude and humility.

Here is what St. Theophan the Recluse said about prayer: “Not every, however, the performance of a prayer or prayer is a prayer ... Prayer itself is the emergence in our heart of one after another reverent feelings for God ... Our whole concern should be that during our prayers ... the heart is not empty, but in it was qualityd by some feeling aspiring to God. When there are these feelings, our prayer is prayer, but when not, it is not yet prayer.”

Through prayer we draw closer to God. The distance between us and the Lord is enormous, and the approach to Him is determined by the relationship of the sinner to God. Sometimes we feel like there is a wall between us and God. But you need to understand that we ourselves built this wall with our sins, unseemly deeds. God is always with us, but we are far from Him God always hears us, but we don't hear Him. If we go to God with love for Him, condemning our

sins, repenting of them, if we love God more than the surrounding well-being, then He is open to us, and the distance between Him and us is reduced. If a person is not able to overcome his pride, conceited thoughts, if he is self-confident and does not differ in humility, then the distance separating a person from God becomes infinite.

True prayer is to turn your mind and heart to God. The Gospel says that true prayer does not consist in words and their pronunciation, but “in spirit and truth” (John 4:23).

What are prayers?

Whatever we ask the Lord, turning to Him, we must first repent of our sins, and then ask for something.

In prayers, we thank God: for the fact that He protected us at night, during sleep, we thank for the help in business, at meals - for the fact that He gave us food, before going to bed we thank for the past day. When everything is going well in our life, everything works out, we also thank the Lord.

Such prayers are called gratitude, and such a prayer - thanksgiving.

Man is sinful, his guilt before God is great. Therefore, he must constantly pray for the forgiveness of his sins, as well as the sins of other people. Such prayers are called repentant. Any pleading prayer begins with repentance.

If a person feels bad, if troubles, sorrows happen in his life, if grief comes, he again cries out to God for help. At such moments, we ask God not to leave us, to comfort us, to help us. Prayer is especially strong for loved ones - relatives or friends. “And the prayer of loved ones, the prayer of a mother, the prayer of a friend is especially strong - it has great power”- said the Monk Seraphim Vyritsky. When we ask God for something, we offer Him pleading prayer, prayer itself is called petition.

How should you pray?

Prayer is not just words, it is work. It should not depend on your mood or well-being. The holy righteous John of Kronstadt called for learning to pray, forcing yourself to it: at first it will be difficult, as in any new business, and then it will become easier. As in any work, sometimes you need to force yourself to start praying, to make an effort, but it will certainly pay off. If we find it difficult to pray, it means that God sets before us new tasks that we have to solve. Here an old Russian proverb comes to mind: "Patience and work will grind everything."

Prayer itself is the emergence in our heart of one after another reverent feelings for God - feelings of self-humiliation, devotion, thanksgiving, praise, petition, contrition, submission to the will of God, zealous falling down, and so on.

Speaking of daily prayer experience , we should mention St. John of the Ladder, who said that you can get used to any science and any business and eventually do this business without any effort. But no one has yet been able to pray without difficulty. This is daily work, constant, but joyful, because in this work the soul is cleansed and draws closer to God. Prayer encourages us to correct our lives, to works of mercy. As Saint Macarius the Great said: “We must pray that we may receive the Spirit of God while still on earth.”

When starting to pray, a person should concentrate, discard vain thoughts, not being distracted by extraneous things and not thinking about something secondary. All thoughts should be directed to God When praying, you need to focus only on prayer, on God. After all, often a person begins to pray, being completely in the wrong mood and state that are suitable for prayer.

It is important to pray, understanding every word, sincerely believing in what is being said. Without faith, prayer is impossible. "Are you asking God for anything?- said John of Kronstadt, - believe that it will be done at your request, as God wills; when you read the word of God, believe that everything that is said in it was, is, and will be, and has been, is being done, and will be done. So say, so read, so pray.

Get ready for prayer

Need to prepare for prayer. It is impossible to pray in a hurry, pronouncing the words of a prayer in a patter! “These people draw near to me with their lips, and with their lips they honor me; but their heart is far from me.”(Matt. 15:8) – this is what the Lord says about those whose lips pronounce the words of prayer, but their thoughts are occupied with completely different, vain everyday affairs. “Too often prayer does not have such significance for us in life that everything else steps aside, giving way to it. Prayer with us is an addition to many other things; we want God to be here, not because there is no life without Him, not because He is the highest value, but because it would be so nice to have His presence in addition to all the great benefits of God. He is an addition to our comfort. And when we are looking for Him in such a mood, we do not meet Him,” says Metropolitan Anthony of Sourozh.

If we learn to live according to divine laws, then we will learn to pray. Accordingly, our life will become full, spiritual.

What is required for successful prayer?

If you want your prayer to be successful, to reach God, to be heard, then everything else - your whole life, thoughts, actions, desires - must be adapted to this so as not to destroy with one hand what the other has built.

One of the important recommendations in teaching proper prayer is to reduce external relations. Priests recommend leaving only the most necessary. Later, when prayer enters your flesh and blood, it itself will tell you what can be added to your life. Particular attention should be paid to the senses - eyes, hearing, tongue. An abundance of impressions can interfere with learning the right prayer.

All free time after prayer should be devoted to reading spiritual books and thinking about God and Divine things. This will help you get on the path to getting closer to God. Whenever possible, go to church, because the mere presence in the temple evokes thoughts of God.

It is very important that prayer is combined with a righteous life.. It is necessary that not a single sin lie on the soul that is not cleansed by repentance. Hurry to be cleansed by repentance for any unnecessary thought, sinful deed. Try to do something good.

You need to pray sincerely, with faith in God, with all your heart.

Because, as St. Tikhon of Zadonsk said: “God does not require beauty of speech and skillful composition of words from the one who prays, but spiritual warmth and zeal.”

Tune in to prayer, pray constantly, trying to use everything that can help in prayer work. Saint Macarius of Egypt said this about this: “God will see your prayer work and that you sincerely wish success in prayer - and will give you prayer. For know that although prayer done and achieved by one's own efforts is pleasing to God, the real prayer is that which dwells in the heart and becomes unrelenting. The key to prayer is faith.. If suddenly, during prayer, a worm of doubt, unbelief penetrates into the heart, then you will not receive what you ask from God, since you offend Him with your unbelief. God does not give His gifts to a scoffer! "Whatever you ask in prayer with faith, you will receive"(Matthew 21:22). When you pray, God expects an affirmative answer to the question of whether you believe in what you say to Him, that He can do it. You must believe in the one from whom you are asking - in the Lord God, the Creator, and in the fact that He is the Lord of everything. You must believe that He will surely fulfill this, because nothing is impossible for God.

If you asked many times and did not receive what you asked for, then you asked without faith, or with pride, or wished for what you do not need, which is bad for you. And if they asked often and what they needed, then not with the perseverance that is needed.

First you need to wish, and then ask with faith and patience, then you will receive what you ask for, if God wants it, since He knows better than you what you need. Very often the Lord delays the fulfillment of the request, forcing you to be diligent to Him, so that you understand what the gift of God means, and keep this gift carefully and with fear, since everything that is acquired with great effort is stored more carefully.

As the holy righteous John of Kronstadt said: “In prayer, the main thing that you need to take care of first of all is a living, clairvoyant faith in the Lord: imagine Him alive before you and in yourself, and then, if you wish, ask for Christ Jesus in the Holy Spirit, and it will be for you. Ask simply, without hesitation, and then your God will be everything for you, performing great and wonderful deeds in an instant, just as the sign of the cross performs great powers.

How to pray at home?

It is desirable to be alone during prayer . But if possible, it is good to read the prayer rule with the whole family. This is especially recommended on solemn days, before a festive meal.

The believer must pray daily: morning and evening, before eating and after a meal, before and after any business. This kind of prayer is called home, or private.
