HISTORY OF THE ORDER

The Order of Bogdan Khmelnitsky was established by the last of the "land" military orders in the days of the liberation of Ukraine at the suggestion of a member of the Military Council of the 1st Ukrainian Front, General of the Army N.S. Khrushchev. This is the only military order, one of the degrees of which could be awarded to ordinary soldiers and partisans. It is also the only order of the USSR that had inscriptions not in Russian.

Although the statute of the order did not stipulate the condition for the preferential awarding of the order to the soldiers of any front, nevertheless, the majority of those awarded were part of the Ukrainian fronts. Perhaps this is partly due to the huge number of partisan detachments operating in Ukraine (partisans were widely awarded the Order of Bogdan Khmelnitsky), and also to the fact that Khmelnitsky is a national hero of Ukraine.

One of the initiators of the creation of the order was the famous Ukrainian film director A.P. Dovzhenko and poet M.P. Bazhan. The design of the order was created on a competitive basis. The work of graphic artist A.S. was recognized as the best. Pashchenko, who was the deputy head of the Department of Arts under the Council of People's Commissars of the Ukrainian SSR and the chairman of the Union of Artists of the Ukrainian SSR. The commission approved his design drawing with the condition of improvements, which were carried out with the participation of the artist N.I. Moskaleva. Chasing and engraving work was done by the engraver V.S. Sokolov.

History of the Order

The Order of Bohdan Khmelnitsky was established as the last of the "land" military orders. This is the only military order, one of the degrees of which could be awarded to ordinary soldiers and partisans. He is also the only order of the USSR that had inscriptions not in Russian (Ukrainian inscription "BOGDAN KHMELNYTSKY").

The Order of Bogdan Khmelnitsky was established in the days of the liberation of Ukraine at the suggestion of a member of the Military Council of the 1st Ukrainian Front, General of the Army Khrushchev N.S., and one of the initiators of the creation of the order was the famous Ukrainian film director A.P. Dovzhenko. and poet Mykola Bazhan.

Although the statute of the order did not stipulate the condition for the preferential awarding of the order to the soldiers of any front, nevertheless, the majority of those awarded were part of the Ukrainian fronts. Perhaps this is partly due to the huge number of partisan detachments operating in Ukraine (partisans were widely awarded the Order of Bohdan Khmelnitsky), and also to the fact that Khmelnitsky is a national hero of Ukraine.

The design of the order was created on a competitive basis. The work of graphic artist Pashchenko A.S. was recognized as the best. The commission approved his design drawing, but suggested making all ten rays of the star the same length and modifying the badge of the III degree of the order. To finalize the project, the artist Moskalev N.I. was appointed to help Pashchenko. (the author of the Order of Kutuzov and in the future - the Order of Glory). Chasing and engraving work was done by the engraver V. Sokolov.

The Order of Bogdan Khmelnitsky, I degree No. 1, was awarded by Decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of October 26, 1943 to the commander of the 12th Army of the 3rd Ukrainian Front, Major General A.I. Danilov. (a day later he was awarded the rank of lieutenant general) for participating in the liberation of the city of Zaporozhye.

Among the holders of the Order of Bogdan Khmelnitsky, I degree, there were such famous military leaders as the chiefs of staff of the fronts, Generals Biryuzov S.S. and Zakharov M.V., army commander Moskalenko K.S., corps commander Koshevoy P.K. (all are future Marshals of the Soviet Union); Commander of the 3rd Belorussian Front, General of the Army I.D. Chernyakhovsky; army commander General of the Army Lelyushenko D.D.

The Order of Bogdan Khmelnitsky, I degree, was awarded to 10 units and formations. The first of them was awarded the 1st separate Order of Suvorov, II degree, the Czechoslovak brigade under the command of General Ludwig Svoboda. The award took place by Decree of January 4, 1944 for participation in the liberation of the Ukrainian city of Bila Tserkva.

The first awards with the Order of the II degree occurred in accordance with the Decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of October 26, 1943. The Order of Bogdan Khmelnitsky II degree No. 1 was awarded to the commander of the engineer battalion, Major Tarasenko B.V. for ensuring the crossing of the Dnieper during its forcing. The Order of the II degree No. 2 was awarded to the commander of the rifle brigade, Lieutenant Colonel Kaplun I.A. for distinction during the same operation.

The first Decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR on awarding the Order of Bogdan Khmelnitsky III degree was issued on January 14, 1944. It noted the successful military operations of a group of Ukrainian partisans during the liberation of the city of Ovruch. As a result of the battle with the eight thousandth fascist garrison, the city was liberated, and a red flag was hoisted on the highest building. It was installed by partisan Ivan Kalashnikov, one of the first holders of the Order of Bogdan Khmelnitsky III degree.

Among the cavaliers of the Order of Bogdan Khmelnitsky III degree is the marine foreman Dubinda P.Kh. - the first of the Soviet soldiers, awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union and at the same time all three degrees of the Order of Glory.

In the autumn of 1943, the Order of Bogdan Khmelnitsky was awarded to the attack pilot, Lieutenant Beregovoy G.T. (subsequently twice GSS and pilot-cosmonaut of the USSR).

Many units and formations were attached to their banners of the Order of Bohdan Khmelnitsky II and III degree. For example, I will name some of them.

There are many cases when soldiers and officers presented to the orders of Bogdan Khmelnitsky (especially III degree) did not receive a well-deserved award. This is what retired Lieutenant Colonel Kirilusha L.K. recalls. (during the war years, an officer of the headquarters of the 60th Guards Pavlograd Red Banner, Order of the Suvorov Rifle Division):

“Suddenly, Major General Monakhov (division commander) looked at me intently.

Where are your awards? - he asked. One of the staff officers reminded me that documents had been sent to award me with the Order of Bogdan Khmelnitsky III degree.

- When will it be? - the division commander objected. He called the chief of staff and dictated an order to award me the Order of the Red Star. Soon, the general attached an order (of the Red Star) to my tunic. Congratulated on the award and said:

“Berlin is still a long way off. I hope that Bogdan will catch up with you on the way.

Unfortunately, this did not happen. The Order of Bogdan Khmelnytsky is “catching up” with me to this day.”

The Order of Bohdan Khmelnitsky, 1st class, was awarded 323 awards (including 10 units and subdivisions).

The Order of Bogdan Khmelnitsky II degree was awarded 2390 awards (including 850 units and subdivisions)

The Order of Bogdan Khmelnitsky III degree was awarded 5738 times (including 216 units and divisions).

The fourth and last of the military orders of Soviet Russia established Order of Bogdan Khmelnitsky. They could be awarded not only to the commanders of the active army and navy, but also to ordinary soldiers of army units and formations. In addition, this award could be awarded to partisans and commanders of partisan formations and detachments operating during the war years in the occupied territory. But, perhaps, the main feature of the order lies in its design. The fact is that the inscriptions are made not in Russian, but in Ukrainian.

Time of creation Order of Bohdan Khmelnitsky refers to 1943, when the troops of the Red Army began active hostilities to liberate Ukraine from fascist occupation. The initiators of its creation should be considered N. S. Khrushchev, a member of the Military Council of the First Ukrainian Front, the Ukrainian film director A. P. Dovzhenko and the poet Mykola Bazhan. The design of the badge of the order was created on a competitive basis. Of the many works presented at the competition, the undoubted victory was won by the design drawing of the Ukrainian artist - graphic artist A.S. Pashchenko, but, at the suggestion of the commission, with slight changes in the size of the badge of the order of the third degree.

Awarding the Order of Bogdan Khmelnitsky

In October 1943, Order of Bogdan Khmelnitsky was established as part of three degrees, the eldest of which was the first. The statute involves the awarding of personnel of the Red Army and Navy, as well as partisans and leaders of partisan detachments who showed courage, high patriotism, dedication, determination and high combat training in operations in battles with the Nazis to destroy the enemy.

The Order of Bogdan Khmelnitsky, 1st class, was awarded to commanders of fronts, armies, fleets, flotillas, commanders of partisan formations, and their deputies. The basis for the award was the successful operations carried out under their command by the military units or partisan formations entrusted to them, as a result of which serious damage was inflicted on the enemy in equipment and manpower.

The badge of the second degree was awarded to commanders who had corps, divisions, brigades, regiments under their command, as well as commanders of partisan detachments for the skillful organization and conduct of a combat operation, during which the enemy’s defensive line was broken through, the water line was successfully forced, the enemy garrison was defeated, or the lines of communication and communications of the enemy are broken.

The Order of Bohdan Khmelnitsky of the third degree was awarded to ordinary soldiers of the Red Army, Navy, partisan detachments, as well as junior command personnel (sergeants, foremen) and junior officers for courage, perseverance and personal initiative shown in carrying out combat missions set by the command, causing serious damage to the enemy and disruption of his military operations.

The award is to be worn on the right side of the chest. The first and second degrees are located after the badge of the Order of Nakhimov. The name itself and the inscriptions on it in Ukrainian indicate that its creation is connected precisely with Ukraine. There is no mention in the statute that the awards will be directly for the heroic actions associated with the Ukrainian SSR. But the history of awards itself testifies to this. The largest number of awards with the Order of Bohdan Khmelnitsky is associated with the Ukrainian fronts, units, subdivisions, partisan detachments operating on its territory during the war years.

First Cavalier Order of Bohdan Khmelnitsky 1st class, became the commander of the twelfth army, which operated as part of the 3rd Ukrainian Front, Major General Danilov A.I. for the successful command of his army during the liberation of the city of Zaporozhye. Many employees of the NKVD and counterintelligence, who carried out their activities as part of the Ukrainian fronts, were awarded the Order of Bogdan Khmelnitsky, 1st class. Among them, General Ivashutin, the head of the Special Department of one of the Ukrainian fronts, as well as Lieutenant General Donskov, commander of the NKVD division, can be noted.

Among the commanders of partisan formations, among the first knights were Kovpak S.A., Naumov M.I., Saburov A.N. and many others. For the liberation of the Ukrainian city of Bila Tserkva, the first separate Czechoslovak brigade, commanded by General Ludwig Svoboda, was awarded the first degree badge. The first orders of Bogdan Khmelnitsky, second degree, were received by the commander of the battalion of sappers, Major Tarasenko B.V. and Lieutenant Colonel Kaplun I.A., commander of the rifle brigade, for ensuring the crossing of troops across the Dnieper River.

The first decree on awarding the badge of the order of the third degree was issued in January 1944. Ten partisans were awarded for participation and personal exploits in the operation to liberate the city of Ovruch. Among them, it should be noted Ivan Kalashnikov, who set a red flag on the tallest building in the city of Ovruch at the time of its liberation, as well as partisan intelligence officer Boldyreva E. A ..

In total, more than eight thousand awards of the Order of Bogdan Khmelnitsky have been made. Of these, the sign of the first degree - more than three hundred, the sign of the second art. - more than two thousand, the sign of the third art. - more than five and a half thousand. Among the awarded - 1076 different military units and formations.
